In its anniversary year 2024, the German Biobank Node (GBN) is publishing a video series in which representatives of biobanks and other supporters and partners have their say, congratulate, look back on activities and successes and formulate wishes for the future.
Searching for biosamples and data across sites
The seventh video celebrates a double anniversary: it is dedicated to the online tool "Sample Locator" for the cross-site search for human biosamples and the associated data, which the GBN launched five years ago. GBN board member Dr. Gabriele Anton and Prof. Dr. Martin Lablans from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) Heidelberg, head of IT, highlight the added value of the German Biobank Alliance's (GBA) federated search tool, which has also been used as a "Locator" by the European biobank network BBMRI-ERIC for the past year. Lablans: "Especially in the field of rare diseases, you often don't find enough material in your own biobank to answer a question, so you have to cast your net wider. And the Sample Locator makes it possible to cast the net over the whole of Germany and, more recently, also across our European partners."
